SCIENCE UNIT 7 - NUTRITION

1) NUTRITION: the process by which an organism assimilates food and uses it for growth and maintenance
- Process: obtention, transformation, transport and elimination.
- Organisms: autotrophs (organisms that manufacture their own food from inorganic substances, such as carbon dioxide and ammonia, for example, green plants, certain algae, and photosynthetic bacteria) and heterotrophs (organisms that cannot manufacture their own food and instead obtain the food and energy by taking in organic substances, usually plant or animal matter. All animals, protozoans, fungi, and most bacteria are heterotrophs)
2) FOOD CHAINS
- Nutrient obtention
- Food chains and web chains
3) PLANT NUTRITION:
- Photosynthesis
- Transportation of substances
- Breathing
4) ANIMAL NUTRITION:
- Breathing:
* cutaneous breathing
* Gill breathing
* Tracheal breathing
* Lungs breathing
5) DIGESTION - CIRCULATION - EXCRETION
- Digestion:
- Circulation: Process in two ways, one takes nutrients and oxygen to the cells, and the other picks up the waste substances in order to eliminate them through the excretory system.
- Excretion: Name given to the removal from the body of waste substances.
